The ABCDE Rule of Melanoma

Let’s keep it simple and to the point: When examining a mole that might be suspicious apply the ABCDE rule:

A: is for asymmetrical, does is appear to be uneven?

B: is for the borders, are they irregular, misshapen and not smooth?

C: is for color. Is the color of this mole consistent or is it darker in the center?

D: is for diameter. Is it at least the size of a pea or larger? I’ve also heard at least the size of a pencil eraser.

E: is for evolving. Does the suspicious mole appear to change in size, shape and symmetry? A Melanoma can change in size, shape and color and can also itch and bleed.
