Beneficial Natural Ingredients: It is important to know what works for your best skin.

Using botanical ingredients in skin care goes back many thousands of years, for instance using olive oil to soften, tea tree oil to heal wounds, or turmeric to reduce wrinkles.  Even as skin care has advanced, traditional ingredients stay the same. In this post I want to go over some of the best natural proven ingredients for some of the most common skin care concerns such as Acne, Redness, Hyperpigmentation, and of course wrinkling.

Let us start with Acne. Some of the most common natural ingredients and botanicals that are used to fight blemishes are witch hazel and willow bark, which are used to reduce seabum and lessens the severity of your breakout. Witch hazel will reduce the oils on your skin and help to fight infections, while willow bark is an anti-inflammatory. Check out this A&B Cooling toner or The Pore Minimizer both contain the active ingredient witch Hazel.

Redness Reducers: one of the great anti-inflammatory ingredients that chemists use is Bisabolol , which is derived from the chamomile plant and red and brown algae.  Check out this great eye cream which uses this ingredient to help with puffy undereyes.

Skin Brightening: Hormonal imbalances, photodamage, acne, and other factors can lead to pigmentation problems.  There are many ingredients that will help to suppress the melanogenesis to prevent future hyperpigmentation.  Some of the most widely used ingredients include Arbutin, Licorice, and mulberry. All of these ingredients have the same function which is to inhibit the tyrosinase which is the enzyme that causes hyperpigmentation. Check out these excellent skin lightening products here.

Collagen Stimulators: Antiaging products formulated to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines primarily focus on collagen production which basically plumps the skin! Without question one of the most popular ingredients used is Vitamin A more commonly seen on the packaging as retinoids or retinoic acid.  Check out this popular product Antioxidant Infusion Crème.  Vitamin C is another naturally derived topical ingredient with a long history in antiaging skin care.  L-abosrbic acid (Vitamin C) is widely known as the ingredient for the repair of sun damage, however Vitamin C is amazing because of its ability to enhance the synthesis of collagen: a critically important skin protein that strengthens structural support and resilience of the skin. Vitamin C is also an extremely effective Antioxidant, which are a critical natural defense against “free radicals,” unstable molecules that age the skin. Check out this amazing Vitamin C Crème.

To all the ladies out there, do you also want a gorgeous skin that glows and a skin you can’t stop flaunting? It is a desire of every lady to have a gorgeous skin. And as per my experiences eating healthy can affect you far more than applying synthetic products and achieving a fake glow that does not last long. So some of the food items for gorgeous skin are:

  • Fish- Eating fatty fish like that of salmon, herring or mackerel are some of the excellent foods that are best for the skin. These fishes contain omega-3-fatty acids that are useful in keeping skin thick, supple and soft and moisturized as well.
  • Dark chocolate- Dark chocolate is known to be really beneficial for your skin. The cocoa present in the dark chocolate helps in making skin hydrated and thick. Cocoa is rich in antioxidants hence helps in prevention of aging in skin.
  • Green Tea- This is one such drink that everyone is aware of. Apart from cutting off fat from the body, green tea has some great skin benefits too. The powerful compounds in green tea that are called catechins are known to make skin elastic and hydrated.
  • Red Wine- Red wine is the product made from red grapes and hence the red grapes contain a compound naming resveratrol which is known to prevent aging in women and especially in women after 30. The compound delays the aging process making skin youthful.
  • Tomatoes- tomatoes are known to contain vitamin c and other major carotenoids and specifically lycopene. The beta carotenoids and lycopene are known to prevent wrinkles on skin and even protecting skin from sun damage. If you come home from a hot sunny day, you can even apply a tomato on your skin, let it dry and wash off to remove tan.

lets face it, many people have a fear of skin care that contains oil. This is where the “oil-free” craze in skin care came from. I even sell an oil free moisturizer for that reason. I get asked all the time. Do you have any oil free products? Well I have news for you, oil is not all bad. Our skins job is to adapt to environmental changes. Every time we strip the oils from our skin with our routine, our skin needs to kick oil production into overdrive in order to protect us from moisture loss and to re-balance.

What is the fear of fats? Fatty Acids are refereed to as essential because our bodies do not have the ability to create these fatty acids on their own. It has to come in the form of diet. Fatty acids (lipids) protect the skin from weather changes, sun exposure, pollution, and other free radical sources.  Since these lipids have such and important function in creating a barrier and protecting the skin. With a strong barrier the skin is less exsposed thus resists aging effectively.  Check out these amazing barrier drops The Lipid Drops

Did you know that sticking to a healthy eating schedule can better protect you from ultraviolet induced damage. A mouse study that was conducted by the university of CA Irvine found that eating at abnormal times can disrupt the circadian rhythm of the skin and alters the potency of an enzyme that protects the skin against UV radiation., The study showed that the mice who were given food only during the day, instead of their normal nocturnal pattern of eating at night sustained more skin damage.

There are so many cons to having oily skin, one of the biggest I can think of is Acne. But many people never knew this but there are some pros to having oily skin too! First oily skin provides a natual UV protection. Oily skin tends to burn less . Most importantly Oily skin is said to age slower. Because of the prolonged hydration that the oil provides people will see less wrinkles when it counts!  Lastly it is said that sebum delivers essential nutrients such as Vitamin E to the skin, which is an antioxidant that protects humans from free radicals.

Lets face it, our lives are busy, we work hard, we are always on the go, and we cant always eat as healthy as we might want to. The Convenience of unhealthy food is causing an epidemic of adult acne among both men and women. Diet has been linked to stimulating the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. More oil can mean more acne! So what do we need to do to REMI-D this? Part of having great skin is having a balanced diet full of healthy choices. First I would say you need to drink tons of water. Drinking lots of water will help to flush the impurities and toxins and help to renew the cells.  A diet rich in antioxidants will help balance the skin. The best place to find antioxidant is in your fruits and vegetables, so never skip the salad bar!

Did you know that stress can cause acne? When the body is under emotional stress, it produces an overabundance of hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. Stress can also stimulate the sebaceous glands and produce more oil. It is important to stress less if you feel that your skin tends to break out when you are having one of those weeks!

While in their younger years, hormonal imbalances can really exasperate skin issues, caused by puberty.  Both boys and girls have increased male hormones called androgens that cause and signal the oil glands to mature. During this process we get an over production of sebum usually in the t-zone, chin, nose, and forehead. These condition usually ease after puberty, but can linger into adult hood.

When we have overactive sebaceous glands the skin produces too much oil which we call sebum. too much sebum makes the face appear oily and shiny. This sebum also clogs the pores and as a result you get bumps and even acne. If we do not treat the over activity the oils can weaken the skin and make it more vulnerable to harmful bacteria. the oil can trap environmental pollutants, debris, & dirt which can cause blackheads and acne. Since the skins defense is compromised  it makes it difficult to reject the bacteria. disregarding the build up of oil is going to cause congestion in the skin, and acne will develop when the glands mix with the dead skin cells and the dirt to suffocate and clog the pores. Here is a list of some great acne products to try.

Both Men and Women have Acne, and oily skin. Men are more likely to have oily skin because their skin tends to be thicker. Because men are more likely to have oily skin their attempts to control acne are more aggressive then that of women.  Some of the many reasons that men are more likely to have acne, clogged pores, and blackheads are the hightened hormones and their daily grooming regimen. Another reason for excess oil production is because of their daily shaving routines, which can strip the skin of natural oils which in turn will produce more oil.  Check out these great Acne and oil control products here
